Debbie Scerri, aged 28, winner of the Malta Music Awards for two consecutive years 1996 and 1997 for "Best Female Singer" started her career about five years ago. She formed part of the Backing Vocalists with the Maltese Entry 'This time' in the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 which was held in Mill Street, also in Ireland. Debbie took part in various local musicals and festivals and is also a presenter on the National Television. In September 1995 she represented Malta in Greece with the song 'Born to Love'. In March 1996 she won the 'Best Performance Award', when she represented Malta in the 'South Pacific International Song Contest' in Australia, in which she will be participating also this year with the song 'This time you won't ' written by Ray Agius. Her first CD Album 'Having You' was released in May 1997 after she represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Dublin with the Song 'Let me Fly'. |

After the band's
journey in the mid-80's, Winter Moods have now established themselves amongst
the best bands in the Maltese Islands. From their release of their first
CD Album, Winter Moods, which stayed in the Top 10 for several weeks, they
have never looked back. Their success was noted by the organisers of MMA
in 1996 where they were invited as guests, nominated as one of the Top
3 bands in Preference '96 Awards and in the Last Sixteen Thirty Awards.
During 1997, Winter Moods also performed as main supporting act for Fish in August, participated in Maltafest 97 and numerous concerts all over the island. The climax for the year were the nominations for the Malta Music Awards 1997 - Best Newcomers, Best CD Album and Best Band. Winter Moods were crowned Best Band for year twice - by the MMA jury and also by the listeners poll of a local radio station. 'Sarah' became one of the best ever recorded songs by a local band and can already be called a 'classic'. It is definitely the song of the year. Winter Moods are in the process of recording their second CD album which shall be released during 1998 after which various concerts will be held. |

Katrina and the
Waves was formed in 1979 by Katrina Leskanich, Alex Cooper, Vince de la
Cruz and joined in 1981 by Kimberely Rew, the composer of 'Love Shine a
Light'. The song was originally penned for a branch of the Samaritans,
to use for their 30th Anniversary celebration. At the last minute the band
also decided to make it an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 1997.
Best-known for the classic 1985 summer hit 'Walking On Sunshine' also written by Rew, the song was re-released last year. It was GMTV's theme tune for their charity telephone week 'Get up and Giver'. The money from the CD sales helped six UK charities. Nominated for a Grammy in 1985, the band has toured the USA with the Beach Boys. They have also toured with The Pointer Sisters, Chaka Khan, Wham, Fleetwood Mac and Don Henley. The band's other hits have included 'Sun Street' and 'Do you want Crying' and 'That's the way' both major success in the USA and Europe: and 'Mexico' which became a theme tune for the 1986 Mexico World Cup. The name The Waves is from the book by Virginia Woolf, to whom Alex Cooper is related. The band have played over 1,000 performances and their biggest audience was on The Mall in Washington DC - 750,000 for a July 4th celebration. American-born Katrina is the lead singer of the band. She is one of six children of a US Air Force Colonel and has lived in England for the last 20 years. Katrina first met Vince when she joined his mother's church choir. 'Thirty-something' Katrina lives in Cambridgeshire and lists one of her hobbies as golf. Alex Cooper, the drummer, was born in England and is a graduate of Cambridge University. Vince de la Cruz, the guitarist, a Mexican American has lived in England for 30 years. Katrina and the Waves were the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 winners. |
