Water is usually gathered rural areas by hand,
animal power or diesel generators. The use of manual pumps absorbs time
that could be used more productively elsewhere while the use of animals
may result in the loss of animal meat and dairy products. Diesel or gas-powered
pumps typically have a low to moderate initial capital cost but require
a complex network of support for the delivery of fuel, spare parts and
maintenance services. If any of these is absent, the water supply is interrupted.
